Iqbal

I found Iqbal quite moving. The fact that the protagonist was a deaf mute had nothing to do with it, neither did the triumph of the spirit aspect of the film.

The film manages to catch the feeling of what its like to be in the middle of the cricket ground (not one packed with cheering fans) , the stillness that engulfs one in the centre, the sound your own heart beating, the smell of trimmed grass, the sound of the ball hitting the middle of the willow.

What I liked was the kid who could run up to wooden stumps and try and bowl in front of a makebelief audience all day long. Reminds one of what its like to chase a dream and what it is to have dreams. Dreams that do not always materialise but in retrospect one is always glad to have had them.

A great film well-captured by your words. Remember the summers at Shivaji Park. I would be at the nets by 5.30am. Shadow-batting on a damp pitch, with only the 'maali' for company. Other accompaniments included spent condoms used by amorous couples the night before. This was the time before the municipality decided to crack down on such behaviour by installing mega lights that bathed the entire ground - almost depriving the ground of its secretive purdah. Aah, those were the days...when I could have been a Kapil Dev...when giant scores were notched with book cricket...when gully cricket was de rigeur...

I have not seen the film. Dont also follow too much cricket. But I surely want to read more of what you write! I loved this piece in particular... While they are only a few lines, I can almost feel as i have just played an entire game of cricket... can almost smell the grass, hear the ball hitting the bat...and hear the silent cheer of the imaginary crowd! Absolutely awesome! Keep writing!
